Hispanic Ministries Active in Minnesota

The Reach of Adventist Preaching Widens in Minnesota

Hispanic RadioThe Hispanic population in the northwest area of Minneapolis is now receiving Adventist programing on Sundays from 6 to 10 A.M. on one of the local radio stations catering to that sector of the population, AM 1530. As pastors Eric Juarez and Samuel Bustamante make the presentations, members of the church, Bárbara Ortiz, Yolanda Gabiño, and Julia D. León, pray in the background. The Adventist Church in Minnesota is only the second to have religious programing in Spanish in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and surrounding areas, and the first to have television presence in Univision, the largest and best known television company in the United States and only Spanish station in Minnesota.

Children Preachers Proclaim Jesus

Hispanic KidsHispanic KidsSabbath, April 26, was a high and inspiring day in several Hispanic churches as it was the children who did the preaching. In celebration of the Day of the Child, the Adventurers Club and other children led in both the Sabbath School and the worship service during which they spoke of the first (at His birth), second (soon to happen), and third (after the millennium) advent of Jesus to this earth. Each of the children used their Bibles and a good PowerPoint presentation to illustrate their message. In the afternoon, they also held a three-hour prayer vigil.

Hispanic Women’s Ministries

Hispanic Women's Meeting“Hope for the Woman” was the theme of the recent Women’s Retreat which took place in Elk River, and where more than 146 ladies attended, more than 29 of whom were guests. When the organizing committee met to plan for this event, it was their goal to bring in someone who would not only speak to the needs of women but who would also provide guidance and training in evangelism and who would have personal experience in personal and public evangelism and would call for a personal decision at the end of the retreat. The guest speaker for this event was Addly Campos from the Adventist World Headquarters. As a result, two of the guests were baptized and many others are preparing for a future baptism. Even women retreats can be opportunities for evangelistic training and outreach!

TELL MINNESOTA

This is the theme for the next five years of Hispanic evangelism in Minnesota. In addition to the media presence in Univision and in two radio stations – one FM and one AM, the members of the twelve Hispanic groups, companies, and churches are conducting more than 400 Bible studies in preparation for the reaping evangelistic series in July with Pastor Alejandro Bullón, evangelist from the South American Division.

 Hmong Lutheran Pastor Joins Church
Hmong ChurchSeveral months ago we reported that our Hmong pastor, Ko Saelee, had gone to visit the Hmong Lutheran pastor in St. Paul who told him he had become convicted about the Sabbath, and as a result he lost his church and his job with the Lutheran Church.  Since then, I (Pastor Consuegra) have been studying with Pastor Jay Lo and his wife, and Pastor Saelee and his wife Terri have also been studying and visiting the Lo family.

On Sabbath, May 10, Pastor Lo and his wife Panyia joined the Adventist Church by profession of faith (both were baptized by immersion several years ago), and a mother and three of her children were baptized.

Pastor Ko Saelee works half time for the Wisconsin Conference where he has already organized a group in Madison, and half time for the Minnesota Conference where he organized the Hmong Church two years ago.  At that time, there were only four people who were members — Chad and Michelle Lee, and two of their relatives.  Chad is now the head elder and Michelle teaches the children Sabbath school class.

On Sabbath, there were over  twenty children ages ten and younger, more than twenty young people (ages 11-25), several young-adults, and about ten older people.  When you visit the Hmong Church, you sense their enthusiasm, warmth, and love for God.  Pastor Saelee conducted the Sabbath school lesson and, although Pam and I could not understand it, it was very animated and many people, specially the young people, intervened and responded to his remarks.  I had the sermon which was translated by Pastor Lo.

No good church meeting could end without a good meal, and this Sabbath was no exception as the baptisms and church service were followed by a dinner of typical Hmong food — a delightful treat to celebrate and welcome our new church family members.
