Disaster Response Alert!
6/17/2010
Thursday, June 17, 2010, tornados touched down in various areas of MN. We believe Wadena, MN was hardest hit. According to Fox 9 news, a witness said dozens of homes were damaged. An elderly couple was killed in Almora, MN. Please pray for everyone affected by these storms, and for emergency responders. Bob Hilde, our volunteer MN ACS/Disaster Response Coordinator, has contacted the local Emergency Manager, MN Homeland Security, and MN Voad to let them know that we are here to help. Generally, it takes several days to determine whether or not Adventist Community Services / Disaster Response is needed. We will post updates on this website and through our community services mailing list. If you would like to be on the mailing list, please email stacy_hilde@hotmail.com and we will be happy to add you. God bless you - Keep Praying!

SILVER SPRING, Md. —A devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit southern Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, destroying buildings and triggering tsunami alerts for Haiti and the surrounding islands in the Caribbean.

Within the first hour, the earthquake, which struck 10 miles (15 kilometers) outside the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, was followed by two powerful aftershocks registering at a magnitude of 5.9 and 5.5 respectively. According to government officials, this is the strongest earthquake that has ever struck the region.

"I think it is really a catastrophe of major proportions," reported Raymond Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the United States telling Atlanta-based news agency CNN.

At present, no reports of deaths or injuries have been announced, however some early reports indicate extensive damage to infrastructure in some areas. The Associated Press reported that a hospital collapsed during the quake.

ADRA is currently monitoring and evaluating the situation. Updates will be released as response efforts expand.

To send your contribution to ADRA’s Emergency Response Fund, please contact ADRA at 1.800.424.ADRA (2372) or give online at www.adra.org.

As most of you are aware, the swine flu is now a pandemic, meaning a world-wide, quickly spreading outbreak. While we all must take precautions to avoid contracting the flu, we must not panic. To put this into perspective, the normal seasonal flu is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. The best prevention activities are to wash your hands frequently and cover your mouth when you cough. In the event that an outbreak occurs in your area, face masks are recommend in crowded public areas.

The official government website providing updates and helpful information is http://www.pandemicflu.gov.

Bob Hilde, the ACS/DR Coordinator for the MN Conference, and Debra-Davis Moody, the ACS/DR Coordinator for MAMDRT (Metro Adventist Disaster Response Team), will be in continuous contact with the MN Homeland Security division to coordinate a response effort in the event we are called to help.
